Third accused held in Batala police post grenade attack case : DGP

Punjab Police have arrested a third accused in connection with the grenade attack on Police Post Urban Estate in Batala, with preliminary investigation indicating his alleged links to an ISI-backed terror module operated by a Portugal-based Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) mastermind, DGP Gaurav Yadav said on Saturday.

The accused has been identified as Karanjit Singh alias Bacha, a resident of Murgi Mohalla in Batala.

The arrest was made by the Counter Intelligence (CI), Jalandhar, in a joint intelligence-led operation with the Batala Police, the DGP said.

The development comes days after police arrested two other accused, Rajan alias Gullu and a juvenile, in connection with the grenade attack that took place on August 1.

According to preliminary investigation, Karanjit Singh allegedly worked as an operative of the terror module. Police said he went into hiding after the attack and was allegedly planning similar attacks on police establishments across Punjab.

Yadav said technical and human intelligence helped police teams track and apprehend the accused.

Further investigation is underway to uncover the complete terror network, identify foreign handlers and local support networks, and establish the forward and backward linkages of the alleged conspiracy, the DGP said.

A case was registered at Civil Lines police station in Batala under Sections 109 and 324(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Sections 4 and 5 of the Explosives Substances Act.

The arrest comes amid the Punjab Police’s ongoing drive to strengthen security and prevent terror-related activities in the state.
