The Police identify the accused as Fatehabad resident Parth Mehta

Patiala: The Patiala police on Saturday arrested the third accused in connection with the student unrest at Chitkara University, Rajpura, during the intervening night of September 25 and 26, officials said.

The accused, identified as Fatehabad resident Parth Mehta, was arrested from Fatehabad in Haryana, police said. He has been accused of allegedly using social media platforms to circulate misleading messages and incite students during the incident.

A police spokesperson said an FIR had been registered at Banur police station following the incident and a detailed investigation was launched. During the probe, police had earlier arrested Himanshu, a resident of Nangal, and Aryan, a resident of Ambala.

According to police, Mehta’s name surfaced during the subsequent investigation. The police allege that he disseminated messages intended to provoke students and was also involved in activities related to the damage of the public property and obstruction of government employees in the discharge of their official duties.

The Police said Mehta has been booked in the same FIR under relevant provisions of law.

With his arrest, the total number of accused arrested in the case has risen to 3. The police said further investigation was underway to identify other people allegedly involved in spreading misinformation, provoking students, damaging public property and obstructing government employees from discharging their duties.

The police spokesperson said further arrests could follow as the investigation progresses.

The unrest at the university had taken place during the intervening night of September 25 and 26. The Police said the case is being investigated to establish the role of individuals allegedly involved in the events and related online activity.

The Patiala police said it remained committed to maintaining peace and public order in the area.
