Chahal says Test dream will remain unfulfilled but white-ball career will continue
Yuzvendra Chahal has brought his 17-year first-class career to an end, choosing to step away from red-ball cricket while continuing to pursue opportunities in the limited-overs format.
The Indian leg-spinner played his final first-class match for Northamptonshire at Lord’s before announcing his decision. Chahal, who never earned a Test cap for India, acknowledged that his ambition of representing the country in the longest format would remain unfulfilled.
His retirement from first-class cricket, however, does not mark the end of his playing career.
Chahal made his intentions clear while announcing the decision, stating, “I am not Done yet.” He remains committed to ODI and T20I cricket and intends to continue his efforts to return to the Indian National team.
The right-arm leg-spinner has been one of India’s prominent white-ball bowlers and has also established a significant record in the Indian Premier League.
According to the career figures provided, Chahal has taken 121 wickets in 72 ODIs, while he has 96 wickets from 80 T20Is. In the IPL, he has claimed 233 wickets in 188 matches, making him the competition’s highest wicket-taker and the first bowler to cross the 200-wicket mark.
His best bowling figures are 6/42 in ODIs, 6/25 in T20Is and 5/40 in the IPL.
With his first-class career now over, Chahal’s focus now shifts entirely towards white-ball cricket. He has made it clear that his ambition to represent India remains intact and that he will continue competing for a place in the national side.
