Punjab Vidhan Sabha passes resolution against paper leaks

The Punjab Assembly on Monday passed a censure motion against the BJP-led central government over repeated examination paper leaks, accusing it of failing to safeguard the country’s examination system. The motion was adopted by a voice vote after a debate in the assembly. The opposition Congress walked out during the discussion.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the Punjab government would send the resolution to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Union Ministry of Education and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, urging the Centre to introduce stronger measures to prevent paper leaks and restore confidence in public examinations.

During the debate, Mann alleged that repeated paper leaks had shattered the aspirations of millions of students and criticised the government’s handling of protests by young people demanding accountability. He also accused the Centre of failing to ensure transparent and secure examinations. Mann further said that numerous paper leaks had occurred since 2014 particularly in states governed by the BJP, and argued that recurring incidents had damaged the credibility of India’s education system and its professional qualifications.

Mann also criticised the use of police action against student protesters and said the focus should instead be on identifying those responsible for examination malpractice and ensuring accountability.

The Centre has previously said it has taken steps to tighten examination security, including introducing stricter anti-cheating laws and measures aimed at protecting the integrity of national-level entrance and recruitment tests.
