Pinjore-Kalka sanitation workers protest over delayed wages, seek end to contract system

Door-to-door sanitation workers employed by the Pinjore-Kalka Municipal Council staged a protest, alleging that their salaries had not been paid for several months, leaving them struggling to meet household expenses and support their families.

Providing details, supervisors Neeraj, Kuldeep, Rajkumar, Kamal, Puran and Saurav said the prolonged delay in salary payments had created severe financial hardship. They alleged that while some other employees had already received revised salaries, they had neither received the increased wages nor been paid on time. They further claimed that even when salaries were disbursed, they were often not paid in full.

Drivers and helpers participating in the protest said they carried out their duties diligently but felt disheartened when their wages were not released on time. Expressing their anger, the employees demanded that the contract employment system be abolished.

The workers also raised concerns over workplace safety, alleging that they were often instructed to arrange repairs for faulty vehicles themselves. They said being compelled to operate damaged vehicles exposed them to the risk of serious accidents while performing their duties.

The employees demanded that salaries be paid every month on a fixed date at the revised wage rates. They alleged that whenever they sought payment, they were repeatedly given fresh assurances instead of receiving their dues.

According to the protesting workers, they had earlier been assured that their salaries would be credited by 25 July, but the payment had still not been made, forcing them to stage the demonstration.

Speaking during the protest, the workers said, “In this period of rising inflation, it is extremely difficult to survive without money. We demand that our salaries be paid on a fixed date every month at the revised rates so that we can support our families with dignity.”
