The Punjab Vigilance Bureau has arrested an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) posted at Dirba police station in Sangrur district for allegedly accepting a Rs 25,000 bribe, officials said on Tuesday.

The accused, identified as Tarsem Lal, was arrested following a complaint lodged by a resident of Anaj Mandi, Bhawanigarh, a Vigilance Bureau spokesperson said.

According to the complaint, the ASI had allegedly demanded Rs 30,000 from the complainant in exchange for not conducting a raid to arrest him in connection with another case.

The complainant reportedly recorded a conversation related to the alleged bribe demand and subsequently approached the Patiala Vigilance Range after refusing to pay the amount.

Acting on the complaint, a vigilance team caught Tarsem Lal accepting Rs 25,000 from the complainant in the presence of two government witnesses.

The spokesperson said a case had been registered against the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Vigilance Bureau police station in Patiala.

Further investigation into the matter is underway.
