Chandigarh, April 16
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Wednesday said the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam will enhance women’s participation and leadership in policy making, highlighting its role in bringing women into the mainstream of governance through reservation in legislatures.
Addressing a gathering at an event, Saini referred to initiatives taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for women’s welfare and empowerment. He recalled the launch of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign from Panipat in 2015 and said it led to a shift in social attitudes and improved the sex ratio. He noted that Haryana’s sex ratio has increased from 871 to 923.
Saini said several schemes, including Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, and Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, have contributed to strengthening women’s safety and financial inclusion. He added that opportunities for women have expanded across sectors, including defense, aviation, and education, with greater participation in institutions such as IITs and in missions such as Chandrayaan 3.
He said Haryana has implemented 50 percent reservation for women in panchayati raj institutions, which has contributed to improvements in education, health, water, and sanitation in rural areas.
Calling the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam a significant reform, Saini said it provides 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament and state assemblies, ensuring their participation in decision-making and leadership roles.
The chief minister said the legislation marks a step towards greater inclusion of women in governance and reflects a broader push for empowerment, with its implementation expected to shape future political representation in the country.
