Former Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar on Monday challenged the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government to make public its statewide drug survey report alleging that the exercise was aimed at understanding and taking control of the illicit drug trade.
Addressing a press conference, Jakhar claimed that ₹250 crore had been spent and 28,000 employees deployed for the survey, which covered 65 lakh families. He questioned why the report had not been released despite the expenditure.
Jakhar alleged that the survey was not intended to tackle Punjab’s drug problem but to develop a business model around the illicit trade. He blamed AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia for what he described as a plan to control the drug supply chain.
He also raised questions about pharmaceutical drug abuse citing a statement by the Punjab DGP that pharmaceutical drugs accounted for 80 percent of substance abuse. Jakhar alleged that the government had sought to gain control of the pharmaceutical drug supply chain and questioned the reinstatement and appointment of a drug inspector as Drug Controller.
Jakhar cited several cases to support his allegations including a 2023 heroin seizure in Nathana, the alleged escape of a murder accused known as Harry to Dubai, and the recovery of heroin linked to constable Karam Singh, who was associated with the anti-drone system known as Baaz.
He alleged that these cases pointed to a wider network involving drug trafficking, extortion and weapons smuggling. He also questioned whether senior police officers were involved in the alleged network.
Jakhar urged the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to expand its probe into the Parvinder Singh Jhota case in Mansa to include the Drug Controller office’s in Chandigarh. He said investigators should examine those allegedly directing the network before focusing on medical shops.
He also said he would write to the Union Home Minister seeking a probe by the CBI into the cases involving Harry and Karam Singh. Jakhar said the National Investigation Agency (NIA) should investigate the alleged international links involving drugs and weapons.
The BJP leader further accused the Bhagwant Mann government of losing public trust and questioned the lack of progress in the Guri Chahal case, which he said had been subject to High Court orders.
Jakhar expressed confidence that Union Home Minister Amit Shah would expose what he described as an organised drug network in Punjab.
