Punjab approves new sewage treatment plant for Amritsar

For many residents of Amritsar, overflowing drains and an ageing sewage network have long been a persistent civic concern. The Punjab government now says it is taking a major step to address the problem by approving a new 60 million litres per day (MLD) sewage treatment plant and a matching sewage pumping station under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme. Sharing details, Punjab Local Government Minister Harjot Singh Bains said the government was committed to improving civic infrastructure in Amritsar. “Amritsar is our holy city and we will make sure all its problems are successfully resolved, whether they relate to sewerage, garbage or any other civic issue. This is what the Bhagwant Mann Government stands for — infrastructure that’s built to last,” he said.

The new project is expected to improve sanitation, reduce pollution and support cleaner waste management in one of Punjab’s most visited cities.

The project is intended to strengthen the city’s sewage treatment capacity, reduce pressure on the existing overloaded infrastructure and help curb the discharge of untreated wastewater. Officials said the tender for the project has already been issued and is scheduled to close in August 2026, with construction expected to begin soon afterwards.

The proposed treatment plant will also include facilities to convert sewage sludge into Bio-CNG, producing renewable fuel from waste and supporting cleaner urban infrastructure.

The project forms part of the Punjab government’s broader AMRUT 2.0 programme aimed at upgrading water supply, sewerage and other urban services across the state. According to the government, more than 64 projects have already been completed under the scheme, while another 50 to 60 projects are expected to be finished by March 2027.
