Panchkula, July 13
The Panchkula administration has made extensive preparations to address potential challenges during the monsoon season, with a special focus on the Ghaggar River and areas vulnerable to waterlogging, Deputy Commissioner Satpal Sharma said.
Sharma said all officials were given necessary directions before the onset of the monsoon and preparations have been carried out as in previous years. This year, special attention has been given to the Ghaggar River, where temporary settlements along the riverbanks have been removed as a precautionary measure.
“Officials continue to conduct regular inspections,” Sharma said, adding that monitoring has been intensified in vulnerable locations.
The Deputy Commissioner warned residents against entering the Ghaggar River during the monsoon. He said that even if there is clear weather in Panchkula, rainfall in the hills can suddenly increase the river’s water level, creating a risk of major accidents and loss of life.
He said public announcements have been made to raise awareness, while police teams are also conducting regular checks at various locations. Restrictions have been imposed under Section 163 to prevent people from entering the Ghaggar River during the monsoon period.
Sharma also highlighted the recurring waterlogging issue in Sector 19, which is located in a low-lying area and is affected by a nearby drain. He said he had inspected the site along with the Panchkula Mayor and directed officials to clean the drain. Work on addressing the issue is currently underway.
The Deputy Commissioner said around 200 disaster volunteers are also working to support emergency response efforts during the monsoon.
He further stated that several villages in Panchkula face road connectivity problems during heavy rainfall due to waterlogging, and the administration is taking steps to address such situations.
