Chandigarh, June 11

The Punjab Police on Thursday dismantled a cross border drug smuggling racket with the arrest of six people and the recovery of more than 30 kg of heroin in Amritsar.

Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigations revealed that the accused were linked to a Dubai-based smuggler who was allegedly facilitating the supply of heroin consignments from across the border.

According to police, the operation was carried out as part of an ongoing crackdown against narcotics smuggling networks operating in the state.

An FIR has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act at the Chheharta police station in Amritsar.

Police said further investigation is underway to identify additional members of the network and establish both backward and forward linkages connected to the smuggling operation.

Investigators are also examining the financial trail associated with the racket and probing possible hawala connections linked to the accused.

The recovery is being seen as a significant breakthrough in Punjab Police’s efforts to curb cross border narcotics trafficking in the border region.
