Chandigarh, April 21
Academician Madhu Kishwar has been booked by Chandigarh Police following a complaint alleging the circulation of misleading and false content on social media that purportedly harmed an individual’s reputation and disturbed public peace.
According to police, an FIR has been registered at Sector 26 Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act. The complaint, filed by a city resident on April 19, alleged that certain social media posts and video clips containing obscene text were being circulated with misleading identification of the person featured in the video.
Police said the complainant termed the act a deliberate attempt to create false electronic records with the intent to cause injury and spread misinformation. The content in question was also alleged to have the potential to disrupt public peace and harm the reputation of a constitutional authority.
During preliminary investigation, police recorded statements of individuals linked to the original video. According to the official statement, the video was initially shared from a woman’s social media account, where she identified the person in the clip as her husband. Statements of her husband and another individual seen in the video have also been taken.
The investigation into the matter is ongoing, police said, adding that further action will be taken based on findings.
In a social media post, Kishwar stated that a Chandigarh Police team visited her residence late at night to serve notice in connection with the FIR. She said she had requested that the officials follow due procedure and return in the morning.
The case highlights concerns around the spread of misleading digital content and its potential legal consequences, with authorities continuing to examine the matter.
