Visually impaired navigators to lead Chandigarh-Sanawar car rally

Around 45 participants are expected to take part in the TSD-format rally to be held on September 12.

Rotary Chandigarh Shivalik, in association with Tynor Orthotics and The Lawrence School, Sanawar, will organise a visually impaired car rally from Chandigarh to Sanawar on September 12, combining motorsport with empowerment and inclusion while honouring late rallyist Hari Singh.

The rally will be conducted in the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) format and is expected to feature around 45 participants. Each participating car will have one visually impaired navigator, one driver and one assistant.

Addressing a press conference at the Chandigarh Press Club in Sector 27,  Rotary Chandigarh Shivalik, President, Anurag Agarwal said on wednesday, “The rally will be flagged off from Chandigarh Club, Sector 1 at 9 am . Conducted in the TSD (Time-Speed-Distance) format, the rally will feature around 45 participants with each car comprising one visually impaired navigator, one driver and one assistant.”

Assistant Governor, Zone 8 Rotary International District 3080, Manjit Kaur said visually impaired navigators will play an active role in the rally by using route instructions to guide drivers along the designated course. “The visually impaired navigators will play an active and critical role in the rally, using route instructions to guide their drivers along the designated course,” she said.

The rally will travel through Chandigarh and Panchkula before proceeding on the Kalka-Shimla Highway to The Lawrence School, Sanawar.

Rotary Chandigarh Shivalik, Director Youth Service, Shiv Kumar Sharma said the event is the first interstate car rally being organised in Chandigarh which will have visually impaired navigators who would be assisted by Braille route instructions.

Kumar Guatam, Senior Housemaster at The Lawrence School, Sanawar, said this tribute to Hari Singh is significant as he was a celebrated name in Indian and international rallying and an alumnus of the school.

At Sanawar, the visually impaired navigators will interact with students and share their personal journeys, achievements and experiences. The interaction will also focus on Braille, assistive technology, accessibility and inclusion.

The organisers said the rally will celebrate the spirit of rallying and human potential while keeping alive the legacy of late Hari Singh.
