Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that the meeting would be ‘particularly significant’ as it marks the first time the G20 Summit is being hosted in Africa. The African Union joined the bloc during India’s presidency in 2023. In his departure statement issued ahead of his three-day visit to South Africa, where he will attend the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg at the invitation of President Cyril Ramaphosa, the Prime Minister said that the summit would offer an opportunity to review global economic and developmental challenges, noting that South Africa’s theme – “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability” – builds on outcomes from previous summits held in New Delhi and Rio de Janeiro.
Prime Minister Modi said he would outline India’s approach in line with its motto “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – One Earth, One Family, One Future.” He is also expected to meet several world leaders and attend the sixth IBSA Summit on the sidelines of the G20. The prime minister said he looked forward to engaging with South Africa’s Indian diaspora, one of the largest overseas communities of Indian origin.
