Health Minister praises medical team behind the successful transplant

Patiala, September 16

Punjab Health and Family Welfare and Medical Education and Research Minister Dr Balbir Singh on Wednesday met the first successful kidney transplant patient of Government Rajindra Hospital, Patiala where the procedure was performed on September 10.

The 37-year-old patient from Romanapati, Namol, Sangrur district, and his 29-year-old wife, who donated her kidney, were discharged from the hospital after recovering from the procedure.

Dr Balbir Singh enquired about their health and appreciated the couple’s courage, particularly the wife’s decision to donate a kidney to her husband. The patient had been suffering from kidney failure caused by membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN), he said.

The patient and his wife thanked the Punjab government, the Health Minister and the medical team at Rajindra Hospital for providing the treatment and supporting them through the transplant.

Dr Balbir Singh said the life-saving procedure was carried out free of cost under the Chief Minister Health Scheme. He said eligible patients suffering from kidney and other serious diseases should approach government hospitals for timely treatment instead of raising money for their medical expenses.

He said kidney transplant treatment at private hospitals generally cost around Rs 8 lakh to Rs 12 lakh, while the Punjab government would completly bear the treatment expenses of eligible patients under the scheme.

The minister described the launch of the kidney transplant facility at Rajindra Hospital as a significant development in Punjab’s government healthcare and medical education sectors.

He also praised the transplant team led by transplant specialist Professor Dr Sarbpreet Singh, along with urology specialists Professor Dr Harbhupinder Singh Sandhu and Dr Suparn Sharma, nephrology specialist Dr Thakurveer Kohli and anaesthesia specialist Dr Tanveer Kundra.

He also appreciated Medical College Director-Principal and Medicine Department Head Dr RPS Sibia and hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Vishal Chopra.

Dr Balbir Singh said, “This is a new chapter in the history of government medicine in Punjab.”

The minister further said a 300-bed trauma centre was being established at Rajindra Hospital, while a 50-bed critical care unit was in its final stage.
