Pro-Khalistani leader Jagmeet Singh steps down after defeat

Mark Carney has declared victory for the Liberal Party in Canada’s general election, vowing to unite the country under what he called the “strong Canadian values” of humility, ambition, and unity.
“It’s Canada, after all,” Carney said in his first speech as Prime Minister-elect, promising to govern for all Canadians, not only those who voted for him, Canada-based news outlet The Globe and Mail reported.
The Liberals’ triumph came as Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP), resigned following a humiliating defeat. Singh, a pro-Khalistan figure, lost his seat in Burnaby Central, British Columbia, and left the NDP facing the prospect of being reduced to single digits in the House of Commons — putting its official party status at risk, according to media reports.
In his acceptance speech, Carney struck a defiant tone against foreign pressure, particularly from the United States. He warned of a persistent threat of U.S. annexation, a major theme of his campaign, accusing former U.S. President Donald Trump of seeking to “break us, so that America can own us.”
“That will never, ever happen,” Carney said. “The era of open global trade is over. These are tragedies, but it’s also our new reality.” He pledged to negotiate Canada’s future economic and security ties with the United States on equal footing, while seeking new trade relationships elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre acknowledged Carney’s projected win and congratulated him. However, he confirmed he would stay on as party leader despite steering the Conservatives to a surprise defeat after leading in the polls earlier this year, according to the news outlet The Guardian.
