A midair collision between a US Army Blackhawk helicopter and an American Airlines passenger jet near Washington, DC, has resulted in no survivors, according to fire officials. Washington Fire Chief John Donnelly confirmed on Thursday that 28 bodies have been recovered from the Potomac River following the crash. “At this point, we don’t believe there are any survivors,” Donnelly said during a news conference at Reagan National Airport. “We are now transitioning from a rescue operation to a recovery operation,” Donnelly said, according to media reports.
The crash occurred as an American Airlines jet, carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, collided with the Blackhawk helicopter while it was attempting to land at Ronald Reagan National Airport. A large search-and-rescue operation was initiated, and authorities halted all takeoffs and landings at the airport. Media outlets reported that three soldiers were aboard the Blackhawk.
President Donald Trump expressed his condolences, stating that he had been “fully briefed on this terrible accident” and extended his prayers to the victims’ families, adding, “May God bless their souls.”
