OpenAI to ease ChatGPT restrictions after mental health review

 OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, on Wednesday said that the company will relax restrictions on its AI chatbot ChatGPT in the coming weeks after initially tightening them to address mental health concerns. Altman said the company had deliberately made ChatGPT “pretty restrictive” to ensure it handled sensitive mental health issues responsibly. “We realize this made it less useful and enjoyable for many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get this right,” he said.

He added that the company had developed new tools to mitigate serious risks, enabling them to “safely relax the restrictions in most cases.” A  new version of ChatGPT is expected to be released in the coming weeks, allowing users to customise its personality. “If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or use a ton of emoji, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it—but only if you want it,” Altman said.

The company also plans to introduce expanded features in December, including age-gating and more adult content options for verified users, as part of its “treat adult users like adults” principle.
