Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Wednesday flagged off an army truck carrying six tonnes of sweets for soldiers deployed along the country’s borders as part of Rotary’s annual Diwali initiative.
Commending the Rotarians for remembering soldiers who celebrate festivals away from their families, Kataria appreciated their efforts to share festive joy with personnel serving in difficult conditions.
The initiative, guided by the motto ‘Aap Hain To Hum Hain’, has been organised by Rotary since 2016. This year, the consignment will be airlifted by the Indian Air Force (IAF) from Chandigarh for distribution among soldiers at various border locations.
Rotary Club of Chandigarh president Teena Virk said the project was conceived by Usha Saboo, wife of former Rotary International president Rajendra K Saboo. Members of the Rotary Club of Chandigarh and Rotary International District 3080 have been actively participating in the initiative.
Past district governor Madhukar Malhotra thanked the IAF fleet in Chandigarh for facilitating the transportation of the sweets to different destinations across the country.
