New Delhi, April 17
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi drew laughter in Parliament on Friday with a humorous remark involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a debate on women’s representation. Addressing the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi spoke about the influence women have on people’s lives, saying that everyone learns from mothers, sisters and wives. He noted that both he and the prime minister did not have “the wife issue”, prompting amusement among MPs.
The moment followed a playful exchange triggered by comments from Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who joked about not writing a poem for his wife, unlike Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. Rahul Gandhi used the discussion to underline the broader role of women in shaping society and public life, calling them central to India’s national outlook. The debate focused on legislative proposals related to women’s reservation and electoral delimitation.
He also referred to a speech by his sister, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, praising her for bringing a lighter moment to the House. Rahul Gandhi joked that she had succeeded in making Home Minister Amit Shah smile, something he said he had not managed in years.
The remarks briefly shifted the tone of the session, offering a moment of humour amid discussions on key political reforms.
