No relief for Majithia, next hearing on July 8

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday adjourned the hearing in the petition filed by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia, who has challenged his recent arrest and subsequent police remand in a disproportionate assets case. The case , which came up before the high court, was deferred to July 8 due to the absence of required documents, including a copy of Majithia’s remand order.

Majithia has approached the court seeking relief from what he alleges is an “illegal arrest and remand,” following a vigilance FIR lodged against him on June 25 under Sections 13(1)(b) and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The SAD leader contends that the case is driven by “political witch-hunting and vendetta,” asserting that he is being targeted for his criticism of the current ruling dispensation.In the plea, Majithia claims he was detained from his residence in Amritsar at around 9 a.m. and formally arrested only at 11:20 a.m., violating Article 22(2) of the Constitution and Section 187 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. The petition argues that this delay constitutes illegal detention. His legal team also cited video evidence and the remand order issued on June 26, which they say supports claims of procedural lapses and infringement of statutory rights.
