The Haryana State Commission for Women chairperson has raised concerns over growing violent behaviour among children following the alleged assault on a six-year-old girl at a government school in Panchkula, calling for greater parental supervision, school counselling and renewed focus on moral education.
She said children’s behaviour was influenced by their surroundings and the content they consumed, making it important to examine family environments, parental behaviour and exposure to violent material on social media and online gaming platforms.
Emphasising the role of schools in shaping children’s behaviour, the chairperson said regular interaction and counselling sessions should be organised to understand their concerns and identify behavioural issues. She also called for restoring moral education as a priority, noting that its importance had declined in schools despite its earlier inclusion during zero periods.
The chairperson said she would personally meet the six-year-old victim and help her overcome the fear and emotional distress caused by the incident. Congratulating the family on the child’s safe return home, she assured them that the commission would extend support to help her resume school and studies, including her preparation for the JEE examination.
She further said the commission would issue directions to ensure regular classroom inspections and monitoring of CCTV cameras in schools in coordination with the Education Department.
The chairperson stressed that teachers and school authorities had a moral and institutional responsibility to inspect all classrooms after school hours to ensure no child was left unattended.
She said the safety of students must remain a priority and school administrations should take their responsibilities seriously.
