Marking World Environment Day, Mindspace Business Parks REIT launched a sustainability-focused campaign titled “Mindspace Leaves a Mark” at its Airoli campus in Navi Mumbai to raise awareness about mangrove conservation and the impact of plastic pollution on wetland ecosystems.

The initiative was carried out in collaboration with the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and NGO Project Mumbai as part of the ongoing Navi Mumbai Plastic and E-Waste Recyclothon. Designed as an interactive environmental awareness drive, the campaign encouraged employees, tenants, and community members to participate in a unique installation highlighting the importance of protecting mangrove ecosystems.

Ahead of World Environment Day, a 32×48-foot canvas was placed outside a campus cafeteria, inviting participants to leave footprints as a symbolic gesture of environmental responsibility. Through the activity, organizers sought to draw attention to the growing threat posed by plastic waste, particularly the accumulation of plastic within mangrove roots, which eventually breaks down into microplastics and harms fragile ecosystems.

More than 2,400 participants contributed to transforming the blank canvas into an artistic representation of a mangrove ecosystem. Green footprints formed the mangrove canopy, while blue footprints depicted surrounding waterways, creating a visual message on collective environmental action.

The campaign also highlighted individual stories of participation, including a participant who completed the walk using a prosthetic leg, reinforcing the campaign’s message that every contribution matters. Participants received certificates recognizing their support for environmental conservation.

As part of the initiative, Mindspace REIT pledged to divert one piece of plastic waste from the environment for every footprint added to the canvas. By the end of the campaign, nearly 40 kilograms of plastic waste, including more than 2,400 discarded bottles and containers, had been collected.

According to estimates based on environmental research, the quantity of plastic diverted could help reduce plastic-related stress on around 280 mangrove trees in the Thane Creek ecosystem. The collected plastic has been handed over to Project Mumbai and will be repurposed into benches for municipal schools across Navi Mumbai as part of the ongoing Plastic and E-Waste Recyclothon.

Speaking on the initiative, NMMC Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde said environmental challenges require collaboration between civic bodies, citizens and private organisations. He described the campaign as an example of how meaningful partnerships can generate lasting environmental impact.

Mindspace Business Parks REIT CEO and Managing Director Ramesh Nair said the campaign reflected the belief that business districts and natural ecosystems should coexist and thrive together. He noted that the strong participation demonstrated growing public awareness and commitment towards environmental causes.

Project Mumbai Founder and Chief Executive Shishir Joshi said the initiative helped connect citizens with the issue of plastic pollution while drawing attention to the ecological significance of Navi Mumbai’s mangroves. He added that transforming collected plastic waste into school benches represented a tangible example of sustainable action.

The campaign was supported by several awareness activities conducted across the campus in the weeks leading up to World Environment Day, including educational displays and digital outreach on responsible plastic disposal and mangrove conservation. Earlier this year, the campus also hosted a plastic collection drive that gathered more than 150 kilograms of waste and organised guided nature walks to promote awareness of Navi Mumbai’s wetland biodiversity.
