New Delhi, July 13
India’s merchandise exports rose 15.5 per cent year on year to USD 40.41 billion in June, while imports increased 31 per cent to USD 70.84 billion, pushing the trade deficit to a five month high of USD 30.43 billion.
The rise in imports was largely driven by higher crude oil purchases, along with increased imports of electronics and machinery. Despite the wider trade gap, exports recorded healthy growth in sectors such as electronics, iron ore, handicrafts, meat and dairy products.
The latest trade data reflects continued strength in export performance even as higher import costs widened the merchandise trade deficit during the month.
