DGP says CCTV analysis underway to identify those involved in violence

Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav on Monday said that the students safety remains the top priority after a protest at Lovely Professional University, assuring that those found guilty during the investigation will face strict action under the law. “The campus situation is under control and efforts are under way to restore normalcy,” he added.

Sharing details, he said that the FIR was registered over the incident at Lovely Professional University (LPU), a high-level Special Investigation Team also formed and a detailed probe underway after a student protest over sexual assault allegations turned violent on the campus.

Yadav said the university administration had addressed grievances raised, including a demand for women staff in the girls’ hostel. He said other issues were also resolved through meetings held on Sunday, while another meeting was scheduled for Monday.

Referring to the violence on Sunday night, Yadav said certain elements, allegedly following provocation, attempted to disturb the atmosphere and pelted stones at a police vehicle.

He said those involved in the violence were being identified through scientific and technical analysis of CCTV footage. Police said they would take action against anyone who took the law into their own hands.

The situation at LPU had turned violent after students protested over allegations of sexual assault involving a female student. The protest escalated into clashes with police, stone-pelting, and vehicle damage, while the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway was blocked.

Police had registered separate FIRs related to the alleged sexual assault and the violence during the protest. The university administration had denied the allegations, while the Police Department continued its investigation into both matters.
