Qaumi Insaaf Morcha announces two-day march to Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, seeks release of Sikh prisoners

A two-day march seeking the release of Bandi Singhs would begin from Gurdwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib on October 2 and conclude at Takht Sri Damdama Sahib on October 3, Qaumi Insaaf Morcha-linked activist Bapu Gurcharan Singh said.

Addressing a press conference at Gurdwara Sri Dukh Nivaran Sahib in Patiala on Monday, Gurcharan Singh appealed to the sangat to participate in the march in large numbers. He said various religious and farmer organisations had extended support to the programme.

According to the schedule shared by the organisers, the march will leave Gurdwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib after an “ardaas” on October 2 and proceed towards Damdama Sahib. It will halt overnight at Gurdwara Nanakiana Sahib in Sangrur before resuming on October 3 and concluding at Takht Sri Damdama Sahib.

Gurcharan Singh said the campaign was not confined to the Sikh community and that people concerned about human rights could also support the initiative.

He reiterated the demand for commutation of the death sentence of Balwant Singh Rajoana, who is lodged in Patiala Central Jail in connection with the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh. He said the mercy petition filed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) before the President was still pending.

He also raised the issue of parole for two other convicts in the Beant Singh assassination case, Paramjit Singh Bheora and Jagtar Singh Tara, alleging that proceedings in some cases had remained pending for a long time.

Gurcharan Singh said the issue had been raised during meetings with governments and referred to discussions with Punjab Government officials following a coordination committee meeting of the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha on August 5.

SGPC member Surjit Singh Garhi said the Patiala press conference was aimed at informing the public about the proposed march.

The Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee has also announced participation in the October 2 march.

The Qaumi Insaaf Morcha had earlier announced the October 2-3 programme as part of its continuing campaign concerning the release of Bandi Singhs.
