LoP questions proposed new districts, attacks Rahul Gandhi over Election Commission protest

Dharamshala: Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Jai Ram Thakur on Thursday accused the Congress government of slowing Himachal Pradesh’s development and said the BJP would review and revoke its decisions, wherever necessary, if voted to power in the next Assembly elections.

Arriving in Dharamshala, the former Chief Minister (CM) said the BJP had begun preparations for the elections by reaching out to party workers and elected representatives across the state. During his four-day tour, Thakur is scheduled to visit Chamba and meet party workers and newly elected Panchayati Raj representatives.

Thakur questioned the state government’s move to constitute a committee to examine the creation of new districts. Referring to the ongoing Census process and restrictions concerning district boundaries, he questioned the timing of the initiative and alleged that the government was attempting to divert attention from public issues.

He said new districts should be created after considering rational factors and the sentiments of people across regions. The BJP would oppose any move that hurt public sentiments for political gains, the former CM added.

Accusing the Congress government of reversing the state’s development, Thakur said Himachal Pradesh had gone four decades back in four years under its rule. Referring to the recent Panchayat elections, he claimed BJP-supported candidates had performed well in several parts of the state and said voters would hold the ruling party accountable in the next Assembly elections.

Thakur also targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the party’s protest in Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had come to power through the constitutional electoral process and maintained that the Congress would have to win public confidence and elections to return to power.

Alleging that the Congress leadership was frustrated by being out of power, Thakur said political parties must respect constitutional institutions and that elections remained the legitimate route to power in a democracy.
