Mango leaves and marigold flowers continue to hold a special place in Himachal Pradesh, where they are considered symbols of auspiciousness, positivity, and new beginnings. Even today, these traditional decorations are an important part of various occasions, whether it is a puja (worship ritual) or a festival like Diwali.

Across many parts of Himachal, homes are decorated with mango leaves and marigold flowers during Diwali. People adorn their entrances with beautiful garlands, carefully made by hand. With Diwali falling tomorrow, preparations have already begun, and people have started making these traditional decorations today. The process is simple yet meaningful, requiring just a needle and thread, with mango leaves and flowers carefully strung together one by one.

While markets are filled with beautiful artificial flowers and ready-made decorative items, people in Himachal still prefer these handmade garlands. For them, these decorations are not just about beautifying their homes but also about following an age-old tradition that is believed to bring auspiciousness and positivity.

There is a special excitement among people as Diwali approaches, with children being particularly happy. Yet, what makes the festival in Himachal different is the sense of peace and tranquillity that remains even during the celebrations. Himachal is known for its positivity and peaceful surroundings, and there is something unique about the calmness of life here. People from outside often love visiting the state because of its serene environment.

Even on Diwali, when celebrations are at their peak, the underlying silence and peace remain. Occasionally, the sound of a firecracker reminds everyone that it is the festival of lights, but otherwise, the surroundings continue to carry that deep sense of calm, almost as if time has stood still.

While almost everything is easily available in cities, life in Himachal has a different connection with nature. People grow their own plants and use what is naturally available around them. Many households have mango trees, whose leaves are used for making traditional garlands. They also grow different varieties of flowers, especially marigolds, which are widely used for festive decorations.

I believe anyone would cherish living in such a peaceful and beautiful environment. There is something truly special about a place where nature, traditions, and happiness come together. Perhaps that is why people living in the mountain homes of Himachal find joy in the simplest things. After all, happiness often begins in a peaceful mountain environment, surrounded by nature, pleasant weather, and the warmth of age-old traditions.
