The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, has issued a safety advisory ahead of Diwali, warning people against handling unexploded firecrackers and applying household remedies such as toothpaste to burn injuries.
The advisory issued by the Department of Plastic Surgery aims to prevent firecracker-related injuries and burns during festive celebrations. Doctors cautioned that picking up crackers that fail to explode can cause severe hand injuries, including damage to fingers and possible amputations.
The institute advised people to maintain a safe distance from unexploded crackers and avoid attempting to relight or handle them. Children and young people are particularly vulnerable to injuries caused by delayed explosions.
PGIMER also warned against applying toothpaste, ghee, butter or other household substances to burns, stating that such practices can complicate treatment. Instead, the affected area should be immediately cooled under clean, cool running water.
Doctors advised removing rings, bangles and other tight accessories before swelling develops. People have also been urged to wear cotton clothes while lighting firecrackers and avoid synthetic garments, which can catch fire easily.
In case clothes catch fire, the advisory recommends following the “Stop, Drop and Roll” technique instead of running. People should stop, drop to the ground, and roll to extinguish the flames. A thick blanket may also be used to smother the fire.
The institute further advised maintaining adequate distance while lighting firecrackers and keeping a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby. Used crackers should be disposed of safely.
PGIMER stressed the importance of appropriate first aid and timely medical attention in cases of burn injuries. People should avoid rubbing affected areas or applying unverified substances. Serious burns and eye injuries require immediate professional medical assistance.
The advisory emphasised precautionary measures to reduce preventable injuries and ensure safer festive celebrations.
