Chandigarh, April 22

Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana are set to face heatwave conditions on April 24 and 25, as temperatures continue to rise sharply across north India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned. The weather office said isolated pockets in the three states and Union Territory are likely to experience heatwave conditions on April 24 and 25, as part of a broader surge in temperatures across northwest, central and eastern India.

The IMD has also warned that western Uttar Pradesh may see heatwave conditions from April 23 to 25, while eastern Uttar Pradesh could remain affected from April 22 to 26. Rajasthan is likely to experience similar conditions between April 24 and 26, and Madhya Pradesh from April 23 to 26. In central and eastern India, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh may be impacted from April 24 to 27, while Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand could face heatwave conditions on April 22 and 23.

Alongside the rising heat, hot and humid conditions are expected in several coastal and southern regions, including Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, coastal Karnataka and parts of Gujarat between April 22 and 25.

Night temperatures are also likely to stay unusually high in isolated pockets of Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Odisha, Konkan and Goa, offering little relief after sunset.

At the same time, the IMD has forecast scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning across parts of northeast and eastern India during the week. Some areas in the northeast may also witness heavy to very heavy rainfall over multiple days, it added.

The contrasting weather patterns underline a sharp divide across the country, with extreme heat gripping the north and active rainfall continuing in the northeast.
