Chandigarh, October 8
Counting of votes has started for assembly elections in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir at 8 am on Tuesday. The Election Commission of India(ECI) has set up 93 counting centres in Haryana and 28 in Jammu and Kashmir. Haryana, with 90 seats, voted in a single phase on October 5, registering a voter turnout of around 68%. Jammu and Kashmir voted in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with a turnout of 63.88%, a rise from the 58.58% in the last Lok Sabha polls.
In Haryana, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which won the last two assembly elections, is aiming for a third consecutive victory while the Congress, having spent the past decade in opposition, is hoping for a comeback. Also contesting are the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Jannayak Janata Party (JJP), and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD).
