Shimla, June 1

Leader of the Opposition and former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur on Monday claimed that the results of the state’s local body and Panchayati Raj elections reflected growing public dissatisfaction with the ruling Congress governmentLocal Polls Expose Congress Weakness: Thakur.

In a statement issued from Shimla, Thakur alleged that the state government had attempted to delay the elections, asserting that the Chief Minister was aware of the likely outcome. He said the polls were eventually conducted in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directions and accused the government of trying to influence voters during the election process.

Referring to the election results, Thakur described them as a major setback for Congress, claiming that BJP-backed candidates received significant public support across municipal corporations, Zila Parishads, and Block Samitis. He further alleged that Congress leaders, including senior ministers, failed to secure public backing in their respective areas.

The BJP leader thanked voters for what he termed a strong mandate in favour of the party and expressed gratitude for their continued trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and policies. He argued that public confidence in the Congress government’s promises had weakened and urged the state administration to focus on governance and development.

Thakur also called on the government to ensure effective implementation of central welfare schemes and timely distribution of financial assistance to eligible beneficiaries.

Separately, he questioned the government’s decision to continue appointing acting officials to key administrative positions. Criticizing the appointment of an acting Chief Secretary, Thakur said important posts should be filled on a permanent basis to ensure administrative stability and effective governance.

The Congress government has not yet responded to the allegations made by the Leader of the Opposition.
