Sukhu govt registered false cases against BJP leaders:Jai Ram Thakur

Leader of Opposition and former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Saturday accused the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led Congress government of using false criminal cases to suppress political opposition, alleging that BJP leaders and their families were being deliberately targeted.

Addressing a press conference in Shimla, Thakur claimed the state government was unable to deliver on governance and was instead attempting to silence those who questioned its functioning.

“The government is not performing, so it is trying to crush the voices of its opponents by registering false cases against them,” he alleged.

Thakur claimed that BJP state president Dr. Rajeev Bindal, Paonta Sahib MLA Sukhram Chaudhary and Dharamshala MLA Sudhir Sharma had been booked in different cases. He further alleged that Vigilance and later the Income Tax Department had conducted searches at Sharma’s residence.

He also named BJP leaders Hoshyar Singh, Devinder Bhutto, Ashish Sharma, Rajendra Rana and Ravi Thakur, alleging that cases had been registered against them and their family members. According to Thakur, officials had been directed to register cases against opposition leaders regardless of the circumstances.

Claiming that such political targeting was unprecedented in Himachal Pradesh, Thakur said that if the BJP forms the next government, all cases allegedly registered out of political vendetta would be withdrawn in the first Cabinet meeting.

The former chief minister also questioned the functioning of the state administration, alleging that the government was effectively being run by the Additional Chief Secretary. He claimed that despite Supreme Court directions, the panel for appointing the Director General of Police (DGP) had not been forwarded to the Centre and several officers continued to hold additional charges.

Referring to recent firing incidents in Shimla and Bilaspur, Thakur alleged that law and order had deteriorated under the present government and accused it of failing to maintain discipline within the police force.

He further claimed that the BJP had compiled documents related to alleged corruption by the Congress government and would soon make them public. Thakur warned that officials would also be held accountable if the BJP returned to power.

Taking a swipe at Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Thakur alleged that the Chief Minister was making political predictions instead of focusing on governance. He also claimed that the Congress high command had advised Sukhu to change his style of functioning, failing which leadership changes could be considered.

The state government has not yet responded to the allegations made by the Leader of Opposition.
