The first phase of Census 2027 in Himachal Pradesh will begin on June 16 and continue till July 15, with the exercise being conducted entirely through digital technology for the first time.

The census process will include the use of mobile applications and self enumeration facilities. The state government is also training thousands of enumerators and supervisors for the large scale exercise, which is expected to cost around Rs 86 crore in Himachal Pradesh.

Director of Census Operations, Himachal Pradesh, Deep Shikha Sharma, said Census 2027 is the country’s largest statistical and administrative exercise aimed at collecting key information on population, housing conditions, families, economic activities, and social structure.

She said the first phase will focus on House Listing and Housing Census operations. Citizens will also be able to submit their details online through a self enumeration facility available from June 1 to June 15. Enumerators will later conduct door to door verification of the information provided by families.

According to officials, around 20,630 enumerators and supervisors will be deployed across the state for the first phase of the census. Training programmes for enumerators and supervisors will be conducted from June 1 to June 12, while master trainers and field trainers have already been prepared.

Sharma said the census will be carried out using a specially developed HLO mobile application that will enable real time data uploading, improved monitoring, and reduced chances of errors.

“The digital system will make the census process more transparent, accurate, and time bound,” she said.

She added that all information collected during the census will remain confidential under the provisions of the Census Act, 1948, and will be used only for statistical purposes.

Officials said the data collected through Census 2027 will help in better planning and allocation of resources for education, healthcare, drinking water, roads, electricity, housing, digital connectivity, and other development schemes in the state.
