Kasauli/Chandigarh, May 27
A major forest fire that broke out in the Kasauli forest area of Solan has intensified since yesterday, prompting emergency aerial firefighting efforts after the flames came dangerously close to an Indian Air Force installation. The situation escalated as the fire spread through dry forest terrain, raising serious concerns over potential damage to wildlife and vegetation.
In response, the Indian Air Force deployed MI-17 and Chinook helicopters to carry out continuous water-dropping operations over the affected hills. The aircraft are drawing water from Sukhna Lake to help contain the rapidly spreading blaze.
Officials said prolonged dry weather and the absence of rainfall have significantly contributed to the spread of forest fires across the region. With a view to controlling the situation, the ground teams from the administration and forest department are also engaged in firefighting and relief operations. The officials are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the fire does not reach nearby residential areas.
Locals reported an increase in forest fire incidents in recent days, attributing them to extreme heat and dry conditions. The forest department has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity that could trigger further fires.
