Chandigarh, April 23
BJP president Nitin Nabin on Thursday said that the Bharatiya Janata Party will go solo in the next Punjab assembly elections, dismissing any possibility of an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal and promising a “new form” of the party for voters in the state. BJP president dismissed speculation of a tie-up with regional players, including the Shiromani Akali Dal. He said voters in Punjab would see a “new form” of the BJP in the next election and said the party has consistently stood with the people of the state.
He also took aim at the ruling Aam Aadmi Party, predicting it would lose support due to its own performance in government.
The remarks come against the backdrop of an increasingly sharp political exchange between the BJP and the Indian National Congress.
Nabin criticised opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, describing him as an “immature politician” and questioning his conduct in Parliament and public life. He suggested Gandhi’s political approach lacked seriousness and accused him of operating with what he termed an “anarchist mindset”.
He also targeted Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over his recent remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that Kharge was being influenced by Gandhi’s inner circle.
Earlier this week, Kharge had accused the prime minister of “terrorising” opposition parties through the alleged misuse of government agencies. His comments sparked controversy after he initially used the word “terrorist” before clarifying his statement.
The Election Commission of India has since issued a notice to Kharge, asking him to explain his remarks within 24 hours.
The exchange underscores the increasingly confrontational tone of Indian politics, with parties trading accusations as electoral battles approach.
