Shimla, April 14

A major landslide on Monday blocked the Bagheigarh–Chanju road in the Churah subdivision of Chamba district, cutting off connectivity to Chanju and Dehra gram panchayats and disrupting vehicular movement, officials said. The incident occurred near Chursiyo, where a portion of the hillside suddenly collapsed, sending rocks and debris onto the road and bringing traffic to a complete halt. Long queues of vehicles were seen stranded on both sides, causing significant inconvenience for commuters. Videos of the incident circulated widely on social media, showing heavy debris rolling down the slope.

Eyewitnesses said small stones had been falling from the hillside before the main landslide, prompting locals to sense danger and stop vehicles from passing through the stretch. Their precautionary action ensured that no vehicles were caught in the landslide when it struck.

Following the incident, a thick layer of debris covered the road, making it impassable. Officials confirmed that efforts to clear the debris and restore connectivity have begun. The administration has advised people to avoid the route for now and maintain distance from the affected area.

Meanwhile, the state has largely experienced dry weather over the past 24 hours, with Chamba recording only light rainfall. The Meteorological Department has forecast a fresh wet spell in Himachal Pradesh from April 16 to April 19 due to the influence of a western disturbance expected to affect the region.

Temperature variations were recorded across the state, with Keylong registering the lowest minimum temperature and Una recording the highest daytime temperature. Himachal Pradesh has also received slightly above normal rainfall during the ongoing pre-monsoon season, according to official data.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation in Chamba as restoration work progresses, and weather conditions are expected to change later this week.
