The Himachal Pradesh High Court has granted conditional bail to Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Pankaj Sharma, who was arrested for allegedly tampering with evidence in the death case of Chief Engineer Vimal Negi. Justice Virender Singh, while accepting Sharma’s bail plea, ordered that the accused must not leave the country without prior court permission. The court also directed Sharma not to pressure prosecution witnesses or attempt to influence anyone connected with the case.
In its order, the court observed that the charges against Sharma were not so grave as to justify indefinite detention and that granting bail with conditions was appropriate. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had opposed the bail plea. Sharma’s advocate had argued before the court that he was innocent and falsely implicated. At the time of the alleged incident, he was posted as an Assistant Sub-Inspector at Sadar Police Station, Shimla.
The CBI had arrested Sharma on September 14 from his native village Jol Bahl in Bilaspur district. He was later presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Shimla on September 16 and remanded to two days of police custody, followed by judicial custody.
