Shimla court upholds demolition order in Sanjauli mosque case

A district court in Shimla has upheld the Municipal Corporation (MC) court’s earlier order directing the demolition of the Sanjauli mosque, ruling that the Waqf Board and Sanjauli Mosque Committee failed to produce valid ownership documents. The case, which has drawn widespread public attention, saw the Waqf Board and the mosque committee challenging the MC court’s order in the district court. However, the court found no substantial evidence to support their claim of ownership and dismissed their petition.

Advocate Jagat Pal, representing local residents, said the court’s decision confirms that the mosque structure in Sanjauli was illegal. “Now that the district court has upheld the MC court’s ruling, the Shimla Municipal Corporation should proceed with the demolition to prevent further hurt to public sentiments in the area,” he said.

The matter has been under legal scrutiny for several months amid protests and appeals from both community representatives and local residents. With the latest ruling, the municipal authorities are expected to act soon on the demolition directive.
