US President Donald Trump announced the “termination” of “all trade negotiations with Canada” in a block-letter social media post just before midnight in Washington DC, in a move characteristic of his abrupt and often unpredictable policy decisions. Trump claimed that Canada used a fraudulent advertisement featuring former US President Ronald Reagan to influence court decisions in the United States.
In his post, Trump alleged that the fake advertisement — reportedly worth $75 million — showed Reagan speaking negatively about US tariffs. He said the purpose of the ad was to interfere with the Supreme Court of the United States and other judicial processes. “Tariffs are very important to the national security and economy of the USA,” Trump wrote in block letters.
Citing what he described as “egregious behavior,” Trump declared that all trade negotiations with Canada were being “terminated.” The President’s announcement, made just before he went to sleep, underscores his long-standing reliance on social media to make major policy pronouncements.
Officials in Canada have not immediately responded to the allegations.
