Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Monday unveiled a bronze statue of former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh at Daulat Singh Park on the historic Ridge Ground in Shimla. Sonia was accompanied by her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The six-foot-tall statue of Virbhadra Singh stands alongside those of Yashwant Singh Parmar, Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
In her address, Priyanka Gandhi said Virbhadra Singh had been a disciple of Jawaharlal Nehru and dedicated his political life to serving the people. “Today, the country needs leaders like Virbhadra Singh, Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi who work selflessly for the public,” she said, adding that Rahul Gandhi was striving to bring the truth to the fore as the “voice of the people.”
Priyanka also highlighted the challenges faced by Himachal Pradesh after recent natural disasters and criticised the central government for what she described as inadequate economic support. She said the state’s Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu was working as a people’s leader, but the centre had not provided sufficient assistance despite repeated appeals.
