Russian President Vladimir Putin has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the Victory Day celebrations in Moscow on May 9, commemorating 80 years since the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in the Second World War. The annual event, known for its grand military parade in Red Square, is a symbolic cornerstone of Russia’s national identity and military pride.

The invitation was confirmed by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko, who said preparations for Modi’s visit to Russia this year are underway. Leaders from several nations are also expected to attend the landmark 80th anniversary parade.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh may travel to Moscow to represent India at the Victory Day parade, in case Prime Minister Modi is unable to attend. The possibility of Singh’s visit is currently under discussion, aligning with India’s tradition of maintaining high-level representation at major international commemorations.

The Victory Day Parade serves as a key platform for President Putin to address the world on Russia’s wartime legacy and current geopolitical stance. Modi’s presence would carry significant diplomatic weight, reflecting India’s nuanced position on global conflicts, including its call for dialogue in the Russia-Ukraine war.

In a parallel diplomatic development, Putin is scheduled to visit India in 2025 for the annual India-Russia summit. The high-level visit was set in motion following Modi’s personal invitation during their meeting at the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan in October 2024.
