Jammu, April 20
At least 15 people have died and around 20 others have been injured after a passenger bus plunged down a hillside in Udhampur district on Monday, officials said. The accident happened at about 10 am near Kagort village in the Ramnagar area, as the bus attempted to navigate a sharp blind curve. The vehicle was travelling from a remote village towards Udhampur when it veered off the road.
Local residents were the first to reach the scene, pulling survivors from the wreckage before emergency services arrived. Police and rescue teams later joined the effort, working to evacuate the injured and clear the site.
Officials say 15 bodies have been recovered so far, while about 20 injured passengers have been taken to nearby hospitals. Several are reported to be in a serious condition.
India’s Union Minister Jitendra Singh said he had spoken to the district administration and that arrangements were being made to airlift those critically injured for treatment.
He added that rescue operations were launched immediately and that authorities are continuing to provide assistance at the site.
