The Union Cabinet’s approval of the Rs 1,856.67-crore Khelo India Sports Goods Manufacturing Scheme is expected to create fresh opportunities for sports goods manufacturers in Punjab, particularly in Jalandhar and Ludhiana, said Jalandhar-based manufacturer Kulwant Gulati.
Welcoming the initiative, Gulati said the scheme could support established manufacturers through increased investment, technological advancement and improved manufacturing capabilities.
Approved on October 28, 2026, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the scheme has an outlay of Rs 1,856.67 crore for 2026-27 to 2033-34. It aims to strengthen domestic sports equipment manufacturing, reduce import dependence, increase exports and attract around Rs 6,800 crore in private investment.
Key provisions include capital and turnover-linked incentives for investors and manufacturers, besides support for international quality certifications, research and development, skill development and modernisation of existing industry clusters.
The scheme also aims to develop new integrated manufacturing zones and upgrade existing facilities.
Gulati said the initiative could help enterprises in Jalandhar and Ludhiana improve their competitiveness, explore international markets and generate employment.
The scheme is aligned with the objectives of Khelo Bharat Niti 2025, Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, with a focus on positioning India as a global sports goods manufacturing hub.
