The police have arrested eight alleged arms smugglers and recovered 11 pistols of different calibers while busting a cross-border weapons smuggling network, Senior Commissioner of Police Harmanbir Singh Gill said.
According to the police, the accused were allegedly procuring illegal weapons from a border area and supplying them at different locations. Preliminary investigation suggests that this was the gang’s third trip to bring weapons from the border region for further distribution.
Gill said the arrested accused belong to different age groups. One is 19 years old, while the others are between 24 and 27.
The police are investigating the network to identify other suppliers, contacts and buyers. Raids are being conducted at various locations, and officials said more arrests and weapon recoveries are possible as the investigation progresses.
Responding to a media query about a recent development involving an actor, Gill said the concerned investigating agency had not yet shared any official report or information. He added that the police would provide necessary cooperation and take action as per procedure once they received input.
