Washington, April 26
President Donald Trump was reported safe after being evacuated from the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington on Saturday night following reports of an unspecified threat and possible gunfire.
Officials said there were no immediate reports of injuries. One law enforcement source told US media that a shooter had opened fire, though details remained unclear.
The incident unfolded at the Washington Hilton, where hundreds of journalists, politicians and celebrities had gathered. Witnesses described scenes of panic as security personnel rushed into the ballroom and guests took cover under tables.
“Out of the way, sir!” one person was heard shouting, while others urged people to duck.
Attendees were initially held inside the venue as organisers told the audience an announcement would be made shortly. Many were unable to leave the ballroom, while streets outside were sealed off by police.
Nearby, roads around the White House were closed, with emergency vehicles moving through the area and a helicopter circling overhead.
The hotel, which typically remains open to the public during the event, has in previous years faced security challenges outside the main ballroom, including protests and disruptions.
Some people inside the venue said they heard what sounded like five to eight gunshots. The building was later secured, with members of the National Guard deployed inside as guests were escorted out but not allowed to return.
US Attorney Jeanine Pirro said in a video posted from the scene that the Secret Service had taken control of the building. She added that Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and police chief Jeffery Carroll were on their way.
Authorities have not yet confirmed further details about the suspected shooter or the nature of the threat.
