Dharamshala, July 4
The world-renowned Triund Trek in Dharamshala has continued to attract large numbers of domestic and international visitors this year, with nearly 26,000 tourists reaching the trail during the three months of April, May and June, according to the Forest Department. Sharing the details, Amit Sharma, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), on Saturday said that Triund remains Himachal Pradesh’s most popular trekking destination, drawing adventure enthusiasts from across India and abroad. To improve visitor management, cleanliness and environmental conservation, the Forest Department has introduced several measures along the trekking route.
Sharma said four check posts have been established to operate and monitor the trek, with Gallu serving as the main entry point. For the first time, ticket collection for the trek has been outsourced through a tender process, with the contract awarded for Rs 86 lakh. He added that the Forest Department earned nearly Rs 74 lakh from trekking fees and tent-pitching charges during the previous season. According to data available up to 10 June, around 26,000 tourists had already visited the Triund Trek during April, May and June, enjoying trekking and camping activities.
While appreciating the responsible behaviour of most visitors, Sharma expressed concern that some tourists continue to leave behind plastic and other waste on the mountains.
“Most tourists enjoy nature responsibly, but a few leave plastic and other rubbish on the trekking route,” he said.
He stated that the responsibility for collecting litter has been assigned to an authorised vendor, while the Forest Department also conducts regular cleanliness drives. During the campaign organised on World Environment Day, significant quantities of waste were collected from the Triund Trek.
Appealing to visitors to support environmental conservation, Sharma urged tourists to enjoy the natural beauty of the Himalayas while carrying back all plastic and other waste generated during their journey.
He further announced that the Eco-Tourism Society is preparing to launch a special incentive scheme to encourage tourists who bring back waste from the trek, promoting responsible tourism and environmental protection.
