Kullu, May 28

Three people lost their lives, and eight others sustained serious injuries after a Tata Sumo vehicle met with an accident near Badhai Nullah on the Kullu Peej road in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district on Thursday.

According to officials, the vehicle rolled off the road and fell into a gorge while travelling towards Kullu from Sheela Nullah Panchayat. All the passengers were residents of Sheela Nullah village.

The passengers reportedly cast their votes in the ongoing Panchayati Raj elections before leaving to attend the Kahika fair in Shirad village when the accident occurred.

Local residents rushed to the spot soon after receiving information about the incident and helped shift the injured to Dhalpur Hospital in ambulances. However, three people had died before reaching the hospital, while eight others were admitted with serious injuries.

A tense atmosphere prevailed at the hospital as relatives of the victims and injured gathered there following the accident.

Local resident Trilok Chand said the condition of the road in the area is extremely poor, making vehicular movement difficult and dangerous. He said several accidents have occurred on the road in the past as well, particularly after the monsoon season, and demanded that the government take urgent steps to improve road conditions.

Kullu MLA Sunder Singh Thakur also visited Dhalpur Hospital and reviewed the treatment being provided to the injured. He said preliminary information suggests the accident may have been caused by brake failure, though the police are investigating the matter.

He said three women lost their lives in the accident and assured that the administration and the government would provide all possible assistance to the injured persons and their families.
