Punjab Assembly passes five key bills unanimously

The Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Friday unanimously passed five significant bills during the 9th session of the 16th Assembly, covering labour welfare, education, animal rights, and commercial regulations. A government spokesperson said the bills were passed with full support from all members present in the House.

Among the major legislations passed was the Punjab Shops and Commercial Establishment (Amendment) Bill, 2025, introduced by Punjab’s Minister for Rural Development and Panchayats, Tarunpreet Singh Sond. The House also passed the Punjab Labour Welfare Fund (Amendment) Bill, 2025, aimed at strengthening labour rights and welfare mechanisms. In the field of education, Higher Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains introduced and secured approval for the Rayat Bahra Professional University, Hoshiarpur Bill, 2025 and the CGC University, Mohali Bill, 2025. These bills pave the way for the establishment and regulation of two new private universities in the state.

Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian introduced the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Punjab Amendment) Bill, 2025, which also received unanimous approval. The amendment seeks to strengthen animal protection laws in the state.
