Prashant Kishor ends BJP’s long hold on Bankipur

Prashant Kishor has secured a breakthrough victory in Bihar politics, winning the Bankipur assembly by-election and ending the BJP’s uninterrupted hold over the constituency since 1995.
The Jan Suraaj Party founder defeated BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar by more than 19,000 votes, giving his party its first-ever seat in the Bihar Assembly and breathing new life into a political outfit that failed to open its account in last year’s state elections.

Addressing reporters after the result on Monday, Kishor dismissed speculation that his victory could pave the way for an alliance with other opposition parties. He insisted that Jan Suraaj would continue to chart its own course.

“Our alliance will be with the people of Bihar,” he said. “The people of Bankipur have shown they are ready to move beyond the established parties.”

Kishor credited his victory not only to Jan Suraaj supporters but also to voters and workers from rival parties who, he claimed, quietly backed his campaign.

“I thank the ordinary people of Bankipur, as well as those in the BJP, the RJD and the Congress who supported Jan Suraaj despite remaining in their own parties,” he said.
